There are some very funny moments in this book, the author has a flair for self-deprecating, witty humor. And her way with words is a treat. For instance, the MC is strong-armed (or, rather, sweet-armed) into being a duck--in a chicken suit, mind you--for a duck themed special day, and she thinks when D-day arrives: I asked not for whom the duck quacked, because I knew it quacked for me.The tone of the book is somewhat uneven, because of combining the light, almost frivolous humor with a serious spiritual message. The author starts out with a light hand when the MC's fiance dumps her for another woman and she takes her feelings to God: "God, I'm sorry for being petty. I am sorry for all the countless ways I want to hurt Doug. Please help me to be a loving, gracious person.I need help because I don't know how to forgive him. Really, I just feel like smashing him flat. Amen." I laughed out loud, but also with fellow feeling. Who hasn't felt this way at some point?
Once the male love interest shows up the religious angle becomes more earnest, but there's no particular depth to it. I had high hopes that this would have a unique and interesting take on spirituality, but it comes down to "God has a plan" theology. If you've read one inspirational book these days, you've read them all, as far as their inspirational message is concerned. If you like a little depth--not much, but more than modern novels--to your inspirational fiction, check out Grace Livingston Hill. Her The Enchanted Barn is a classic.
There is never a dull moment in this book and it keeps the reader's attention. The desert setting is wonderful and gives it an "off-the-beaten-path" feeling. I'm not sure I ever bought that the MC was quite as frivolous and superficial as she's portrayed, mainly because I don't think that's anywhere close to the author's personality.
The romance also felt a shade forced. They felt more like friends who have taken that classic misstep of thinking romance should follow. There wasn't a lot of chemistry. And there's one other thing that bothered me. The aunt, portrayed as so wonderful, didn't strike me as having a very deep or accurate grasp on Christianity. She didn't even stop to ask What Would Jesus Do before--completely involved in her own problems--she takes off without a word, doesn't explain anything, or even ask if it's all right to dump all of her obligations on a niece who's been emotionally devastated. If this was my introduction to approved Christian behavior, I sure wouldn't be impressed. Yes, the aunt left for an important reason, but what on earth stopped her from explaining and being considerate and Christian in how she went about it?
All-in-all this is well-written with only a few typos, humorous and action-packed. I can't imagine any reader of modern inspirational novels not ranking it as one of their favorite reads. Non-readers of Christian romance will probably enjoy most of it, but they shouldn't expect anything deep or intriguing in the spiritual message. From what I've read lately, this is either a mandate or a fad, to not think too deeply into the Bible or step outside the Let Go, and Let God (do all the work) life plan. I guess I was looking for something a little more inspired in this inspirational novel, so I'm downgrading it from the four stars I had in mind when I started, to three stars.

This is light and funny and serious all rolled into one. As I was born in the desert, it made reading it fun to relate to
I enjoyed Simone's story of coming to terms with living the life God has planned for her. Christian theme throughout but not preachy.
I loved everything about this book! Mystery, suspense, adventure and romance, this book has got it all. There are some hilarious scenes that made me laugh out loud - the author definitely knows kids - from toddler to teenager. I liked the way she shared her message about faith - it made me think about my own priorities. I learned some interesting things about the desert and the creatures and plants who make it their home. Most of all, I loved all the characters and hated to see "the end". I'm hoping for a sequel!

This was a really fun book. It had lots of humor and was well written. The book takes place mostly in the desert of Arizona--I live in Arizona, so her funny experiences were familiar to me.
Desert Desperate has the right amount of comedy, inspirational, and romance. I personally don't read romance, but I do love a "scrappy" character in my stories with a flair of humor. This book has all of that. A California girl has just been dumped by her to be husband, lost her dream job to a friend, so she goes where she knows someone will console her.....the desert. She loved going to her Aunt Stella's trailer park when she was a girl, and her aunt was more loving and caring than her own mother. There is plenty of adventures along the way for Simone to over come and work out. This is a great story!!!!
I found Desert Desperate to be charming. I don't read a lot of Christian romance typically because I have found that some authors don't know how to weave the message into the story in a manner that doesn't jar the plot or dialogue. I don't like an over abundance of preach in my fiction books. I thought this book was well balanced- the right amount of message sprinkled through out the story and the dialogue felt more natural, therefore worthy of 4 stars. Unlike some, I didn't mind that the message was not very original; the plot was different enough to to make up for it. Some parts made me smile and I was able to visualize a lot of the antics. Characters were neat and original, but not over-the-top. I would try another book by this author. Thanks!
