Tacoma Blue is a memoir by the author who went from the jungles of Vietnam to a career in Law Enforcement. After surviving two tours in S.E Asia as a combat helicopter pilot he decided to continue with the adrenaline rush as a cop.
He started in a small town in the Pacific Northwest where he continued to irritate his supervisors which resulted in getting himself fired after only six months. He then managed to get hired as a patrolman with Tacoma’s Police Deparment. Michael had a varied and exciting career serving in patrol and on motorcycles. After just three years he was promoted to Detective and worked Burglary, Juvenile, and as an Undercover Officer in Narcotics. He moved on to Street Crimes and finally to the elite Homicide Unit.
His problems with authority and the rules kept him in front of the chief’s desk where he was either given a commendation for investigations and arrests, or written reprimands for various infractions. Sometimes he received both at the same time.
The author spent a total of 30 years in law enforcement. He is now retired and living in
Arizona.

I am not sure that everyone would enjoy this book as much as I did. Though I do not know the author, Tacoma is my hometown....born, grew up and still live here. My uncle was a policeman, a good friends brother was a policeman, I went to school with the authors co-worker, "Bobbie", and I knew "Parky", and his family from church.....so I had a personal interest in this book. I found it to be surprising, funny, and sometimes a bit shocking, entertaining, informational....and better understand the difficult life of a policeman...including how my uncle became an alcoholic.

Tacoma Blue eBook michael Lazares Reviews

I obtained this book because I enjoyed his book recounting his experiences as a Army helicopter pilot in Vietnam. While I enjoyed this book too, I found myself dismayed at many of the stories he told.

I served 31 years in the US military and have deep respect for anyone who dons a uniform and protects others, especially cops and firefighters. I am often quite dismayed when I learn that others do not share the same respect and admiration of cops but after reading this book, I understand why some do. Over and over in this book he recounts doing things, usually with other cops, that would get anyone else arrested. That was quite a surprise to me since he starts the book by detailing how upset he was by the crooked police chief and mayor on his first small town police jobs. When he recounts later in the book drinking before duty, on duty, and to great excess after he was off duty he loses credibility as the defender of the honest citizen. Perhaps I am naive but I would prefer that our police professionals not consume 24 beers with their partner while driving their police unit in the highway enroute to a professional conference. I'd rather they were not drunk off duty riding around in a convertible shooting out streets lights, getting drunk and having target practice in hotel hallways, etc. I am convinced he is a brave man and one who seriously wanted to fight crime and that makes his willingness, even eagerness, to break the law and be protected by his badge badge an even greater disappointment for me.

As with the first book, the writing style is easy to follow, the book is logically organized and flows well. As with the first, it could have been improved easily by employing a better editor. Both suffer from plenty of extra apostrophes. Adding an apostrophe and an s does not make a word plural, it makes it possessive. For example, Rob's does not mean that there is a group of people named Rob, it means that something belongs to Rob. Both books suffer from some common misused words, the most prevalent is use when used is appropriate. For example "I use to do something" when "I used to do some thing" is correct. There are also a handful of homonym mistakes. The one that comes to mind is using affect when effect is the correct choice. These mistakes are not nearly as prevalent as they are in many ebooks today but they happen just often enough that they distract from otherwise well written and interesting stories.
Author gives a glimpse of what officers deal with on their day to day and sometimes not so routine encounters.
VERY WELL DONE !!
Having known some of the people in this book, made it even more enjoyable to read... Thanks Michael, keep em coming.
Having lived in the South Puget Sound area for many years it is a treat to read his story of his career in Tacoma and the surrounding area. He makes serious business seem like one great adventure. A riveting book that I read in one sitting because it just got my attention and I wanted to know what came next. Michael Thanks for sharing your story.
It is a great light read
It has its serious parts but for the most part it is funny. I really enjoyed reading it.
Michael Lazares was my colleague at the Tacoma Police Department. Michael was one of those detectives who had a reputation as a dogged investigator and an encyclopedic knowledge of the crime trends in the city and the suspects in those crimes. After his exemplary service to his country as a combat helicopter pilot in Vietnam and his service to the City of Tacoma and the State of Washington as a criminal investigator, Michael has earned a much deserved retirement. I am honored to call Michael my friend.
